Sicily

Having always been a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world, Sicily is a wonderful island, characterised by a unique landscape that offers numerous holiday opportunities.

From the baroque cities of Eastern Sicily to the stunning beaches of Western Sicily, the island is an incredibly welcoming destination, ideal for all kinds of travellers, combining the seaside, nature, art and history.

Sicily is the perfect destination for those who love the sea. With the main island's 1,152 km of oastline to the additional 500 km of the smaller islands, the region boasts a wealth of fabulous beaches. From north to south, from east to west, you'll be spoilt for choice. One of the most beautiful seaside locations is undoubtedly the small but splendid town of Taormina, built on a natural terrace overlooking the sea. Other places not to be missed include San Vito lo Capo, an absolute pearl, with its uncontaminated waters that glimmer in a thousand different shades; and Lampedusa's Spiaggia dei Conigli, which has repeatedly been declared the most beautiful beach in the world.

But Sicily is more than just sea. The east coast is home to Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano and one of the region's main natural attractions. The volcanic mountain, which occupies much of the province of Catania, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Excursions and trekking are organised on Mount Etna, mainly on the southern and northern slopes of the volcano.

Sicily has always embraced great civilisations, which have left precious testimonies on the island over the centuries. One of the most outstanding is the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, one of the most extensive, representative and best preserved examples of classical Greek civilisation. The evocative area consists of the remains of the ancient city of Akragas, the original nucleus of what is now Agrigento. Palermo too, which was already inhabited in prehistoric times, is the product of a combination of different cultures that have come together over the course of time to determine its current configuration. The city is rich in monuments, churches, palaces, villas and gardens characterised by different architectural styles, indicating the various successive periods of domination.
